Taming Tech: Tip #11

TIP #11: SMARTPHONE ALTERNATIVES

A few years ago, I learned about a phone company called Gabb. Gabb phones look like smartphones but have a tweaked Android operating system that doesn’t allow the phone to connect to the internet like other smartphones. They provide GPS location services, calls and texts, and a few useful apps that are preloaded. But there is no app store, no social media, no browsing, no movie streaming, just the basics. But it still looks cool in a back pocket.

My youngest daughter at the age of fourteen began using a Gabb phone for a couple years and believe it or not, we had zero issues. It sat on the counter most of the time but functioned in the ways we needed it to function. I became an affiliate for Gabb so if you are interested in a phone from them be sure to use the code MEDIA at checkout or use this link.

A similar phone to the Gabb phone is the Wisephone by Techless. It is the same concept as Gabb but a different company. I don’t have personal experience with this phone, but I’ve heard good things about it.

There’s a phone that’s even more limited called a Light Phone. It has a colorless screen like a Kindle. It’s small but you can call or text and it has some other utility functions, but no camera, which might be helpful. I know several adults who have switched to a Light Phone to simplify their lives and guard their eyes from tempting content easily accessed on smartphones. Some people today are opting for older flip phones or other dumb phones to simplify their lives.
