Broken Cisterns?

A short passage from the prophet Jeremiah 2:13 can shed light on the prob-lems we are facing today. God says in Jeremiah 2:13, “For My people have com-mitted two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.”

A cistern is a place in the ground for storing water. God said His people were trying to find meaning and purpose in life without God, but it was like trying to store water in a broken storage tank, it just leaks out. God offered them a continual source of water, an analogy for real life in Him, the fountain of living waters, but they rejected their source of life.

No relationship can thrive without regular and personal communication. Do you continually turn to God for your needs? Jesus satisfies our thirsty souls. We read in John 7:37-38, “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who be-lieves in Me, as the Scripture said, from his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

Media and entertainment cannot satisfy this thirst. Owning the newest handheld technology doesn’t satisfy this thirst. Only Christ can ultimately satisfy this thirst.

Jesus said to the woman at the well in John 4:14, “But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

When it comes to our need today for quiet waters, don’t neglect stillness be-fore God in your life. Find satisfaction in Christ through God’s Word and in prayer.
